So I've been thinking lately about getting a tattoo. I have one very small one done by a friend that was supposed to be my initials, but it didn't really turn out very good. The problem is, I don't know what to get that would actually be something I'd want to keep forever. I mean, one day my grand kids will see it and ask about it, so it's got to be something I really love.
I've thought about getting a ball of yarn and some knitting needles. That would be really cool. I've also thought about fairies and flowers. My husband wants one with a Celtic design that commemorates all of our children. So I'm not sure if I should get something like that either. I'm sure that once I get one, I'll want more, but I'm also limited to skin. I'll be getting a teaching position soon and I can't be all tatted up in class. It will have to be on my back or upper shoulders because I want it visible when I wear tanks or go to the pool.
I'm also a huge chicken about needles and I don't ever drink enough to get drunk. I've heard lots of horror stories and stuff about illnesses. So I've got all this swirling in my head and I really want one, and the longer I wait, the longer I don't get one. I've wanted one since I was in my teens. But I just keep getting older and don't have one. What is a girl to do???
So I'm looking for suggestions and comments - good or bad. Do you have one? Do you love it? Would you get another or have you? Did you ever get sick or have a bad experience? Let me know, and you may be my deciding factor! ;-)

No problems, didn't hurt at all. I did use my unscented shea buttah afterwards and it healed well without scabbing or loss of color and yes, I'm getting another.
ReplyDeleteMy sister has several tattoo's and she is a nurse. I do like the one she has of a Celtic Knot with her 4 childrens' names around it. If it is something that is really meaningful to you, why not. I understand about do you want to look at it forever. That has been the only reason why I have not done it (yet). But I may get one in the future. Never say Never.
ReplyDeleteYup I have 3 tattoo's. The only visible one is the one on my ankle. I actually had my husbands name and a rose but then we got divorced so I had to color over the name. So word of advice be careful with putting names on your body :) I do love my tattoos I was actually thinking of getting another one on the back of my neck something very small but I haven't done it yet. I think the ball of yarn and knitting needles sounds cool, I like the idea of the celtic also. Get both hehe. Let us know what you decide.

Some advice I got from someone who had been tattooed; first she got it in henna. She reapplied it when it faded to see if she still loved it a month or so later. She said that she went through three designs that way, until she found one that she still adored after weeks of it.
ReplyDeleteOne petty (I emphasis the petty) thing; for the sake of tatters (makers of tatted lace) please call it tattooing. Tattooing is older than tatting, obviously, but I still find it so disconcerting to be expecting lace and getting ink.
I have one so far, but I have several others I'd like to get. I got mine done around the time I turned 30 years old. I chose to get a butterfly done as a symbol of the changes that I had undergone and to celebrate the new journey I was on. I chose to get it on my back right below my neck. It's been almost seven years and I still love it. Since it's in a location that I don't see all the time, when I do catch a glimpse of it, I'm almost surprised. Like I've forgotten it's there. :)
ReplyDeleteI have no horror stories, no sickness, everything went well. I had a great tattoo artist in a clean, well run tattoo shop. I will say that as I was laying on my stomach in the chair and he turned on the needle, I nearly jumped out of my skin. *g* It was a scary moment! But I have no regrets and my only complaint after seven years is that I wish it were bigger. (I was too nervous to go bigger then.) I plan on adding to it at some point in the future.
I love the idea of the knitting needles and yarn. I've been pondering getting one that somehow incorporates my painting - maybe a paint palette with brush? Not sure yet. :)
